At Clif Bar, we strive to be a catalyst for change in creating a healthy, just and sustainable food system. For us, that effort begins with organic. That’s why we’ve launched a video series, Farmers Speak, which gives voice to the stories of organic ingredients and the farmers who grow them.
The Story of Organic Almonds
In our second installment of Farmers Speak, we focus our attention on organic almonds, a nutritious ingredient that adds flavor and protein to 17 of our favorite bars across four brands:, , and .
It may surprise you that almonds are actually the seeds from almond trees, which are native to the Mediterranean climate of the Middle East and India. Almond seeds were spread in ancient times to Northern Africa and Europe, and eventually made their way to America. The United States grows most of the world’s almonds, with the majority coming from California.
Our video introduces you to the Burroughs, a multigenerational farm family that grows nearly 1,000 acres of organic almonds in California’s Central Valley. The Burroughs didn’t always farm organic; they farmed conventionally until they decided there had to be a better way for people and the planet.
Despite the potential risks of transitioning their farm from conventional to organic—and differences among family members about how rapidly to make the switch—they took the leap over several years. Today, they’re all passionate organic advocates, using a wide array of sustainable farming practices that require hard work, but protect their land for future generations and produce almonds they are proud to sell.
