Just a little garden restoration

Every year we get the whole Berkeley crew out of the office to do some 2080 work. This year, we went back to our friends at Alameda Point Collaborative to help expand their Growing Youth Farm (which we helped renovate last year)—a one-acre urban farm that grows produce for consumption to the residents of the local community. Pretty cool. So what exactly did we do from 9-4? We built some trellises. We built a giant compost bin. We cleared a few hefty tree stumps. We did quite a bit of weeding, soil amending and planting. And, we constructed a giant…

Waffle Wednesday Strikes Back

This morning, we were graced with the smell of waffles wafting through our offices. It had been a while since the last installment of Waffle Wednesday but with the Breast Cancer Fund's Peak Hike happening this weekend, we figured it was a good excuse to raise a few dollars for our friends over at the BCF in exchange for some scruptious waffles. Care to do a bit of weeding?

Last week we braved an hour and a half of very unusual traffic to catch a ferry out to Angel Island. Why were 70 Clifsters headed out to an island in the middle of our bay? We joined forces with local friends REI and Mountain Hardwear to do a bit of foliage house-cleaning, of course. There were a total of 150 of us slicing and dicing the local weeds to make a bit of space on the ground of this delightful state park. After working under some record temps for about five hours, (we had a heat wave here in…

Garden versus Gopher

Last week, a few of us got some fresh air and did a little digging at the June Jordan Elementary School garden in San Francisco. Esperanza from Urban Sprouts showed us around the garden and gave a little schpeal about the program to get us stoked for our afternoon duties. And we were stoked. So stoked, in fact, that we each picked up a shovel and dug for two hours. June Jordan Elementary is located on a little hill way on the outskirts of SF, smack dab in a wind tunnel. We blew around for the afternoon (just check out…
