2 Mile Challenge Reduces 470,000 Miles of Car Trips

Since our company’s humble beginning on Gary’s bike ride, the bicycle is in the CLIF Bar DNA. We love the bike for everything that it brings: fun, freedom and the fight against climate change, especially within 2 miles of where you live. We call it the 2 Mile Challenge.

2 Mile Challenge Autumn

This year’s 2 Mile Challenge welcomed thousands of registrants who helped avoid more than 65,000 car trips totaling upwards of 470,000 miles. From May 12 through October 31, participants logged bike trips to win points for their team to help us determine how to split up $100,000 in grants, which goes to some great nonprofit groups working for bike advocacy and the fight against climate change.  Clif Bar has been proud to partner this year with the Alliance for Biking and Walking, the Safe Routes to School Partnership and in helping to motivate more people to get on their bikes.

Read more about the grant giving on the 2 Mile Challenge blog, including even more details about 2011 stats and how you can get involved.

Clif Bar’s First Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Back in May, Clif Bar & Company hosted its first annual Charity Golf Tournament at Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland, which raised $30,000 for the Oncology Department at Kaiser Oakland.

Clif Bar Charity Golf Tournament - Course Shot

Because this was the first time we’ve ever hosted a golf tournament, we wanted to make the experience memorable for our business partners who participated in the event. All the food was catered by our very own Kali’s Kitchen which included Momofuku Pork Buns on Hole #7, Tacos and Margaritas on Hole #10, and Hot Dogs on Hole #14.

Born on a Bike - Really: The Story of Clif Bar

Each April, we can’t help but think of the joyous time when Gary decided not to sell Clif Bar & Company years ago...and smile ear to ear!

As a celebration of our company’s independence and homage to our roots, we want to share a special video of the celebrated Epiphany Ride. Twenty years ago, on a longer-than-anticipated ride, Gary Erickson dreamed up a better-tasting energy bar that soon became the CLIF Bar we know and love today.

Each year, Clif Bar & Company employees celebrate that special moment with an amazing bike ride.

Check out the video to see what it’s all about!

15,000 Facebook Fans = $5,000 to the Environment

Less than three weeks ago, the Clif Bar Facebook page hit 10,000 fans. And as a “thank you” to all our loyal friends, Clif Bar & Company committed to donate one dollar for every new Clif Bar Facebook fan up to 15,000, in conjunction with our environmental initiatives as a 1% for the Planet member, to an environmental organization.

Well, you responded in droves to say the least. In well under a month, we reached our $5,000 goal, hitting 15,000 total fans in record speed—and the environment reaps the reward.

So thank yourself for contributing! And if this is the first time you’re hearing about 1% for the Planet, above is a great video that will bring you up to speed on everything this great organization does—helping tilt the scales of giving toward the thousands of under-funded nonprofits dedicated to the pursuit of sustainability, and preserving and restoring our natural environment.
