Kyle Thiermann: Surfing for Change

When Kyle Thiermann surfs, people watch… and when he talks, people listen. As one of our youngest and newest additions to Team CLIF Bar, we are honored to support Kyle and his ongoing project Surfing for Change. Not only does Kyle love to get out and get after when the waves are firing, but he is also an inspiration to us all when it comes to Protecting the Places We Play.

Here at Clif Bar we like to measure success on a number of different levels, and Kyle’s way of being hits home at the heart of many of the values that keep us on the path to be our best selves, take action, and continue to get outside and do the things we love to do.

Check out the latest installment from Kyle’s collection of progressive environmental surf videos. Featuring interviews with renowned environmental leader Van Jones, 11-time Surfing World champion Kelly Slater, documentarian Foster Gamble and local surfing activists, the film calls attention to the inherent dangers of nuclear power in the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster — the largest nuclear failure since the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown.

“Surfing for Change: J Bay Nuclear Plant” is a new short film exploring the dangers of a planned nuclear power plant in the pristine shores of Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. The film calls attention to the potential for environmental disaster if Eskom, South Africa’s national power company, locates the nuclear plant in the waters of one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world.

Climber Cedar Wright on Clif Bar’s Day of Action

Following Clif Bar’s Day of Action on October 1, Team CLIF Bar climber Cedar Wright submitted this video. Cedar was one of the participants in the Access Fund’s Day of Action event and created this piece based on his experience.

As Ceedy puts it, “I had the pleasure of taking part in Clif Bar’s Meet the Moment ‘Day of Action,’ which partnered with the Access Fund and their 2011 National Access and Stewardship Summit to do some trail work at North Table Mountain—the local climbing area of Golden Colorado. Clif bar and The Access Fund are both committed to preserving and respecting the outdoor places where we play, so I feel very lucky to be able to help out in my small way.”

We at Clif continue to be inspired by the people we work with and their passion for protecting the places we play! Big thanks to Cedar for sharing his time and his energy in capturing this day.

Mr. Jones Goes to Washington

Business formal attire is about as far away as you can get from the everyday outerwear that’s usually worn by Team CLIF BAR pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones when he goes to work. In fact, when a friend informed him that he’d been invited to Washington to speak on behalf of the winter sports industry about climate change, Jeremy had to call his brother to borrow a suit and tie.

Sharing the Clif Love in Kona, 2011

The 2011 World Ironman Championship in Kailua-Kona has come and gone, but the images remain vivid. And sweaty. A week of blurred bodies and blazing temperatures bordered by the bluest of sea and sky, our week here on the western shore did not disappoint.

Set up in the thick of the mix on Ali’i Drive – just a mile from the run turnaround – each day leading up began by sampling Clif Bar goodness to said ‘blurry’ passers by.
