CLIFCast Podcast: Ellie Greenwood

We love speaking with CLIF Bar experts about how to get the most out of training, but what may be even better is speaking with some of the incredible athletes out there that are influencing and inspiring many of us. Recently, we were able to do just that with the 2011 & 2012 North American Female Ultra Runner of the Year and Team CLIF Bar member Ellie Greenwood of Vancouver, BC. $(document).ready(function() { $("audio").mediaelementplayer({ audioWidth: 220, audioHeight: 30, startVolume: 0.8, // the order of controls you want on the control bar (and other plugins below) features: ['playpause','progress','current','duration','tracks','volume','fullscreen'] }); $(".player").show(); });…

Boston Marathon Course Preview

The 2014 Boston Marathon stands to be its most poignant yet, though for reasons we wish could be changed. Since April 2013, the leaders of the CLIF Bar Pace Team have seen a renewed interest in qualifying for this iconic race, and we’ve been honored to help hundreds of runners finally punch their tickets to Boston. While the Boston Marathon doesn’t offer pace teams of any kind, we’re still here with a full course preview and our best advice to help you tackle the challenges of this course – and make that run down Boylston truly triumphant! The early start…

Big Sur International Marathon Course Preview

The Big Sur International Marathon stands as one of the most beautiful and challenging courses. Even the CLIF Bar Pace Team isn’t immune to its challenges. While we’re big believers in “even splits,” we’re also big believers in running smart – which means we’ll be adjusting our pace accordingly when it comes to the most difficult climbs, as well as the most intense descents. But long before we get to the hills, we’ve got a very early wake-up call and a long and sometimes scary trip to the start. Buses will be leaving from various locations as early as 3:30…

Surviving the Polar Vortex: Cold Weather Running Tips From the Clif Bar Pace Team

The winter of 2013 – 2014 has arguably been one of the coldest on record. Temperatures across the country are dipping well below zero (without the wind-chill) and even places that don’t typically see snow are reporting record low temps. The term “polar vortex,” normally reserved for meteorologists and scientists, has become a part of our daily lexicon. (For the record, a polar vortex is also known as a polar cyclone, and is typically something that occurs in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. It is a bit of a misnomer for our actual weather conditions, but doesn’t it sound fun?)…

Zion Traverse in One Day

Zion National Park is a geological wonder that's hard to run across in a day. And not just because of the physical challenges of such an adventure. 48.3 miles long with over 10,000’ feet of elevation gain, it’s the natural beauty of the park that makes you want to stop at every turn, snap a photo or two, marvel at its infinite beauty and contemplate your place in the universe. But there’s not a lot time for such things. Actually there was 14 hours to think and contemplate. But the challenge of each moment distracted us from too much philosophizing…

Philadelphia Marathon Course Preview

Once you’ve run the Philadelphia Marathon or Half Marathon, you’ll have no doubt that this city is about more than just cheese steaks. With weather that’s (almost) always perfect, a reasonably flat course and tremendous spectators, the Philadelphia Marathon makes PR’s happen – and still gives you a great experience when they don’t. It’s been a special favorite of the Clif Bar Pace Team for years – and for more than the cheese steaks. The start of the race is at 17th and Arch Streets; just look for the avenue lined with international flags. As always, we’ll be lined up…

Course Preview: The Marine Corps Marathon

As a 15 year veteran runner of the Marine Corps Marathon, it’s always held a special place in my heart. While MCM is by no means an easy course, it is steeped in history, lined with spectators, and the best seat in the house on the fourth Sunday in October. Boasting nearly 21,000 marathon finishers in 2011, Marine Corps is indeed a crowded affair. Your race here doesn’t start when the gun goes off, but much earlier in the morning. Training may be key to your best running performance, but being prompt – and even early – for subways, bag…

Three Clif Bar Employees Tackle Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim

Standing atop the south rim of the Grand Canyon for the first time, staring across at the north rim, overwhelms the senses. Your brain struggles to process the scale and beauty of it all. It looks fake as if it had been drawn by hand, the red hues exaggerated for our viewing pleasure. We could see the route we were about to run and it seemed so unbelievably far. Indeed it was far. 23 miles from the Bright Angel trail head to the top of the North Rim. But it appeared more like 230 miles away. The Colorado River, at…

Clif Bar Pace Team at the Boston Marathon

It was a busy weekend for us here at Clif Bar. Aside from the Sea Otter Classic, a bunch of us headed over to Boston for the Boston Marathon. Although the Clif Bar Pace Team was not actually pacing the marathon, many of our pace leaders were there to run the race and reconnect with old friends from marathons past. To help celebrate the momentous feat of running the Boston Marathon, we thought it would be fun to throw a little pre-race celebration for those that the Pace Team has helped qualify over the years. On Saturday night, about 200…
