A Thing Called NPE West

A whole bunch of us Clifsters just returned from Natural Products Expo West, an annual trade show in Anaheim, Calif., but certainly no Mickey Mouse gathering. It’s now the nation’s largest natural, organic and healthy products trade show (52,000 industry people). Best-selling author Michael Pollan was a keynote speaker.

If I may be so bold, Clif Bar & Company had a cool booth—a backyard theme that invited visitors to mingle and taste our food. While it was tiring standing 10-plus hours a day to share our latest products with the industry, we had fun, too. We brought our 2 Mile Challenge biodiesel bus to the booth and let people tour it to learn about the benefits of cycling instead of driving for short trips of 2 miles or less. We hooked up a stationary bike to a computer so people could feel what it’s like to ride 2 miles.

More cool moments: Lou Ferrigno, aka The Incredible Hulk, visited our booth. Lou, who still looks seriously buff (but not green!), wanted to try Clif Builder’s. We also had a visit from actress/activist Daryl Hannah (as exhibited by the photo), who has helped host our Lunafest film festival in the past. She came by to say hi and share ideas for the future.

Walking around the show, even just in the natural/organic food section, was pretty overwhelming. It seemed like soy, hemp and Omega 3s were everywhere. One booth had people dressed as tomatoes. Another promoted an energy bar made with bison (don’t worry, Clif Bar products remain meat-free!).

Glad to be back in our Berkeley office—until next year’s show!
