- Bike to Work Day
Today is Bike to Work Day and we thought we’d take advantage of it. We set a slightly lofty goalget 75 folks from the office commuting in on a bike (or carpooling, or walking).
If you didn’t get a chance to bike to work today, here’s a virtual bike to work day series from my trip in this morning with Tara…
We met up in the city.

On our way to BART, we ran into Melissa and her crew.

We weaved through downtown San Francisco.
We ran into Lisa on the train.

We popped out at the North Berkeley station after a 20-minute ride on BART and happened upon a very busy San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Energizer Station.
...and arrived safe and sound at the Clif Bar headquarters.
All in all, it was a lovely morning.
If bike to work day slipped your mind today, don't fret. You could, hypothetically, do a make up day tomorrow...or the next day, pending your schedule of course.
Sidenote: our grand total for the day was 74.

If you are serious about going green, getting people to live more sustainably etc. it should start from great measures within your company. A company policy that one drive in day can be taken every two weeks, the rest need to be walk, and bike. 4 bus trips equal one drive in day etc. those trips can be traded, sold, etc. park tools does a virual bike league and creates teams around the office that compete. something to shoot for. encouraging employees to show up with whatever smells and clothes may be attached to them would be awesome. be inspired. be progress. check out http://www.bicyclebenefits.org if you get bored. im using all reused paper, only sticker waste and 100 posters for what im up to here in boston… im off to madison wisconsin by bike come sunday.
Hey Ian,
Thanks for the expert advice. We have oodles of “benefits” that encourage us to commute to work. Clif Bar will help employees purchase a commuter bike or fuel-efficient vehicle (think hybrid or biodiesel), will subsidize energy-efficient upgrades to our homes, and provide other incentives to embrace more sustainable living. Check out an entry I wrote a while back: http://www.clifbar.com/blog/detail/march_of_the_hybrids/
It’s got a few nuggets in there about the nit and gritty of our cool commute program.
keep on keepin’ on,
