Dave Zabriskie is The Man
By now, we all likely are well aware that Dave Zabriskie went down in the Team Time Trial at the Tour on Tuesday morning. My stomach twisted as I watched Dave hit the ground, his chances of spending more time in yellow sliding away alongside him. Ouch, in so many ways.

Certainly this morning didn’t go as Dave and the CSC squad had hoped or planned. They were on their way to posting the best time of the day when something happened – a touch of wheels, a bump of the fence, whatever it was it was bad and down went Dave. Man, bike racing can be brutal.

But bike racing can be fantastic, too. Dave has made the ’05 Tour one that I will never forget. At this point it doesn’t really matter what happens with the GC guys – I’ll always remember Stage 1, when Dave shocked only those who didn’t know him as he became the third American cyclist in Tour history to sport the yellow jersey.

Over the weekend in

Salt Lake City , Dave’s hometown, he was all the talk. The papers wrote about him and local cyclists shared stories about him. At a café in

Berkeley, a woman asked me if I knew who the guy in the yellow jersey was – she’d heard he lived in the Bay Area part of the year.

It’s a pleasure to tell folks about Dave Zabriskie. He’s a very likeable guy with a sense of humor that’ll take you by surprise. And now, he’s one of the small number of professional cyclists who knows what it’s like to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France.

I’m sorry to see Dave lose the jersey. And I’m saddened to think that Dave is most likely in a good deal of pain and discomfort today. And many would agree that it’s a shame CSC didn’t win the Team Time Trial – they came so close to a well-earned win. But bike racing is unpredictable; and it’s fantastic; and it can be brutal.

I wish Dave the speediest and most complete recovery. Hopefully he’ll be back on the bike to support Basso – I know he’s eager to play his role on the

team and he’ll undoubtedly do it well. And while his days in the yellow jersey may be over for now, I have a hunch this won’t be the last time we see Dave in yellow.
