Garmin-Cervélo’s Amazing Hushovd Stays in Yellow at Tour de France
When I was just a wee lad I would watch Peanuts and often wonder how it was possible that Charlie Brown wore the same yellow shirt day after day. It seemed weird, if not stinky. Well, it seems like Thor Hushovd has a little bit of good ol’ Chuck in him these days, for tomorrow he will pull on the Tour de France’s yellow leader’s jersey for an amazing fifth straight day.

2011 Tour de France - Thor Hushovd

Although wearing the leader’s jersey for five days is remarkable in its own right, what makes it even more special is how Thor has ridden while in yellow. Generally, a Tour leader is content to simply sit behind his teammates and let them do the work of marking moves and chasing down the day’s breakaway, and this is especially so during the first week of the race. That’s not Thor’s style, though.

After riding like a maniac in the team time-trial to gain the jersey in Stage 2, Thor then played the role of ultimate teammate, leading out Tyler Farrar to set up Garmin’s second stage win in as many days.

And, although most experts were not giving him much of a chance to maintain his 1-second advantage over the GC contenders on the steep finish of Stage 4, Hushovd showed just how determined he is to keep the jersey, staying within a wheel’s length of the best climbers in the world all the way to the line! And, after keeping himself safely in the bunch on Stage 5, the God of Thunder went for the win on the uphill finish of stage 6 today, narrowly getting beat out for second place on the day.

Not since Thomas Voeckler’s incredible ride in the 2004 Tour have we seen a leader so active in controlling his own destiny. And certainly not many riders in Tour history have had the honor of trading in their World Championship stripes, first for polka dots, and then for the famed maillot jaune.

Given that tomorrow’s stage is relatively flat, odds are that Thor will roll into the weekend in the same old shirt, just like Chuck.
