Happy Leap Day

It's not all that often that we get an entirely *free* day; in fact, every four years. How do we get a whole free day?

Every year, we accumulate a few hours of time over the 365 days we spend on this fine earth (or is it 365 1/4 days every year); so each 1/4 day, over four years essentially adds up to one whole lovely *free* day. *Free* in the sense that we don't even really know its accruing and then poof, there it is!

Or, at least that’s how it works in Cristen’s mind (as discussed this morning when she walked by my desk).

There are a handful of us who are in the office today, working away, doing what we do on most non-free days; but think of all the possibilities you can do with these extra 24 hours.

Climb a mountain, bake a loaf of bread, read a few good books.

What will you be doing to celebrate? Believe me, we'd love to hear about it! So, please do share.

Sneak away on an airplane and maximize my time in New Zealand.  The free day won’t exist in a way but I won’t be losing anything at the same time.

I used my ‘free’ day to take time out and support my companies Corporate Social Responsibility by attending a BT Volunteer event (which being voluntary also runs over to the weekend too). Whilst being UK centric around the English curriculum, there is lots or resources available *free* for both schools and parents. Highly recommend you check it out - http://www.bt.com/education

I read something on Friday which queried the free day, claiming that there is actually a days less work this year (253) than last year (254) due to the way weekends fall. Interesting.

Finally, on a seperate thread I’d like to get started, what attracted me to this blog was an article which states Clif Bar rewards its employees for sustainable travel to work. I’d like to find out more about that scheme and in particular how you administer it.

Great work.

Hey there, Andrew. Nice to know we get another “free” day by way of our weekend schedules. Pretty nifty. And yes, we do have a sustainability benefits program--we like to call it Cool Commute Incentives (a nice punny play off of our cool tags...).

Employees accumulate different points based on how they commute to work (walking/biking, public transportation, carpooling) and then can redeem those points on a quarterly basis for different things, like receiving commuter checks, SWAG, or do-good gifts like planting trees or building wind farms (a la cool tags). We also have incentives to purchase a biodiesel or hybrid vehicle (forgivable loans) and to purchase/upgrade a commuter bike.

Lots of options to help the planet breathe a little cleaner.
