Mark the Shark retires from Pro Cycling & Signs Up with TCB Cycling
Mark the Shark Here’s some BIG news on the TCB Cycling front:

In 2007 Mark McCormack, of Foxboro, MA, will retire from the professional ranks of road cycling and race with the amateur TEAM CLIF BAR Cycling program. Mark’s been a regular in the red TCB kit for years as he’s raced with the professional TCB Cyclocross program since 2004. While Mark’s days of racing professionally on the road may be ending he will continue to compete at the pro level during the ‘07/’08 cyclocross season as a member of the TCB program.

Mark’s been a familiar face in the pro peloton for a long time. He began racing bikes in 1985, turned professional in 1992, and raced for fifteen years at the elite level of the sport.

This season when Mark’s not on the bike he’ll be working for Best Buddies as the Sales Director of Friendship Rides, recruiting riders and corporations to participate in Best Buddies Challenge events on the East & West Coasts.

Mark’s a class act.  He’s one of those professional athletes who understands what the “professional” part really means. Obviously he’s very capable on the bike. But when you get to see him in action off the bike, doing what he does as an ambassador for the sport of cycling, that’s when you get to see all that Mark offers as a professional athlete. He’s going to be a great addition at Best Buddies, and I can’t tell you how excited we are to have Mark racing in TCB red on the road this season—it’s going to be a blast!

Mark sounds excited about his ’07 plans as well: “I am really looking forward to wearing red year round; this has been my favorite color for as long as I can remember. I hope to continue making valuable contributions to the sport of cycling through my relationship with CLIF BAR and Best Buddies.”

Mark’s cycling achievements are numerous and impressive:

  • 1992-1993: Team IME

  • 1994: Carver Cycles (raced as an independent Pro)

  • 1995: Team Saab

  • 1996-2003:  Team Saturn

  • 2004-2006: Team Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home Wines

  • 2004-2006: TEAM CLIF BAR Cyclo Cross

  • 2006 CSC Invitational Winner

  • 2005 NRC Ranking: 2nd Place Overall

  • 2005 US GP of Cyclo Cross: 3 Place Overall

  • 2003 US PRO Road Race National Champion

  • 2003 US PRO TOUR Overall Champion

  • 2001 GP Midtbank, Denmark: 3rd Place

  • 1999 Tour of Denmark, Stage 4a: 1st Place

  • 1997 US National Cyclo Cross Champion

  • 1988 US National Cyclo Cross Champion (Junior Men)

  • 1988 United States National Team Time Trial Champion (Junior Men

  • 2003, 1998 US Worlds Team Member (Road Race, Cyclo Cross)

  • 1988 US Junior Worlds Team Member (Road Race, Team Time Trial, Cyclo Cross)

For those who wish to sport the same cycling duds that Mark and the rest of the TCB team will be racing in this season, the TCB Cycling kit is now for sale on

And a big, hearty, “Welcome to the team!” to our new teammate Mark McCormack. I can’t wait to get a lead-out from him.
