The TCB Start Global Cooling Camp

While folks in the bike industry are talking of all things Interbike, the past week-and-a-half has been about more than just the madness in Vegas pour moi. More on Vegas in my next blog entry, but first…

On Friday the 22nd I headed to Boulder for the first-ever TEAM CLIF BAR Start Global Cooling Camp with Ben Turner and the rest of the TIAA-CREF/CLIF BAR Cyclocross gang. Ben and I had been working together for some time to help the cross team leave the smallest ecological footprint it can during the ’06 season.

On the evening of the 22nd, I met with the team, some of the riders’ parents and a bunch of local hoodlums (like race announcer Dave Towle and Neal R. & Ben D. from VeloNews) to spread the scoop about what CLIF BAR is up to with our Sustainable Sports program during the incoming cross season.

Ben explains all the TIAA-CREF/CLIF BAR deets oh-so-nicely in this interview he recently did with Dave on VeloNews TV.

In addition to the TIAA-CREF/CLIF BAR Cyclocross effort, we’ll also be working with TEAM CLIF BAR Cyclocross riders Mark McCormack and Jesse Anthony to offset their cyclocross-generated CO2 emissions during the ’06 cross season. The new team kit even sports the Start Global Cooling logo! Look for the team-issue kit to very likely go on sale this season at VeloWear.

And on the event front, we’ve extended our partnership with the USGP of Cyclocross to include a Sustainable Sports component. We’ll be working with the USGP to replant and restore the six race venues so that we leave the land in as good or better shape than we found it in. In addition to the on-site efforts, on-line registration for the USGP events at BikeReg.com offers folks the option to purchase Cool Tags. Cool Tags are renewable wind energy credits— each Cool Tag purchased will offset an estimated 300 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The way I look at it the sustainability effort is relevant & worthy in actions both big and small. We’re looking forward to assisting the USGP series in taking care of the places where we play, and in turn helping the series spread the message that there’s a whole lot to be done on the sustainability front; every one of us can play an important role.

Let’s take care of the cross season and take care of the planet by spreading the word about all we can do to Start Global Cooling.

Cyclocross ’06—I’m super geeked about it.

PS.  Dave Towle showed me the USGP Boulder course by luring me out to play disc golf. The venue looks great! And it turns out Dave is a disc golf madman—rumor has it he was a disc golf pro in Europe a decade ago. I’m just glad no money was on the line. I threw my arm out like four or five times.
