Tour de France Stage 14
Blame an attractive high school French teacher and early exposure to the films of Francois Truffaut for Matt Walsh's francophile tendencies. Then later came bike racing and watching the grandest race of all, the Tour de France. So as a freelance writer, there’s pretty much no place he’d rather be than in France on the race routes of Le Tour. It’s always an adventure that goes full-gas.

The 100th birthday of the Tour de France is turning out to be a surprise party. I haven’t seen so many twists and turns and reversals of fortune. Just when you thought the battle for the maillot jaune was over, it wasn’t, then it was, then it wasn’t.

You just don’t know what to expect and I’ve officially given up trying to offer any predictions. I do know that today Andrew Talansky showed you why he has the talent to be a possible grand tour winner in the near future.

Everybody wanted in on the break today on stage 14 but Talansky made it happen. A large and motivated escape of 18 riders put over seven minutes into the yellow jersey group of Chris Froome and in the process Talansky moved all the way up to 12th in the overall standings. He also put himself back in the running for the white jersey.

Not a bad day’s work.

If the Tour de France teaches any lessons, then never giving up is at the top of the list. There will be good days and bad days but anyone who hopes to do well has to be mentally strong and relentlessly optimistic.

That message goes for everyone at the Tour including myself. I had a great day today after enduring some logistical snafus yesterday. Hey, you clip in the next morning and head up the road and pedal even harder.

Speaking of up, we have plenty on Sunday -- it’s the giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux. I fully expect fireworks but this being a surprise party, I don’t know who will light them. That’s part of the thrill, right?
