You’ve already seen part one and two of a three-part video series that goes behind the scenes with world-class TEAM CLIF BAR triathlete Chris McCormack. Now we’re rounding out the trio.
Let’s face it—what Chris does is nuts. His training days start at 5:30am and last a long, long time. With the support of his family, Chris sacrifices in order to succeed.
My son’s fourth birthday is fast approaching, and when I went to the grocery store to look for birthday party provisions I was completely grossed out at what was being passed off as “treats” for special occasions. Next to Halloween birthdays carry the biggest potential to serve up the most artificial colors, artificial flavors and genetically modified all-around junky “stuff.”
With so much for parents to concern themselves with these days, I try not to worry myself or others too much about what kids are exposed to during special occasions and various celebrations. BUT – of course the “BUT” – the special occasions are becoming increasingly less “occasional” as my son gets older.
If you are like me, striving (key word) to feed the family a mostly organic and natural menu to limit your kids’ exposure to the other nasty things out there, you might find yourself a little uneasy as the next birthday invitation rolls in.
What I want to know: Why is the junky food, bad-plastic party favor and lead-based paint jumpy seemingly all there is to work with when you begin the preparations? I set out on a mission to do a better birthday party full of fun, flavor and all kinds of fancy party zing without having to compromise natural and organic home-baked goodness.
Chris has won a lot of races, but some of the experts said he’d never win Ironman Hawaii. As a kid, Chris dreamed of victory in Kona. As a world class triathlete, he overcame the odds and celebrated a very special win on Ali’i Drive.
TEAM CLIF BAR athlete Meredith Kessler is an anomaly in pro sport. Although she is a professional triathlete performing at the highest level, she refuses to sacrifice the important things in life in order to achieve success out on the course. Meredith’s daily training routine is, therefore, a super-focused regimen that fills in the spaces between her full-time job, family life, and other passions and hobbies. This is not to say that she trains lightly. Meredith recently took me through her routine, and trust me – it’s brutal.
Meredith is on the treadmill at 6 a.m. for an hour-long interval session, then in the pool for a good, long swim before heading into her downtown San Francisco office to put in a full day’s work. After work, it’s off to Velo SF to teach an exhaustively long spin class which serves as a warm-up for her regular TRX workout. Only then does she get to head back home for some well-deserved family time. It might seem crazy for a high-caliber athlete to try to maintain this type of balance, but apparently it’s paying off.
If you haven’t heard the buzz or know the back story, you must check out the trailer below. Deeper, “follows Jeremy, Forrest and other top freeriders as they travel to the world’s snowboarding meccas and venture past the boundaries of helicopters, snowmobiles and lifts to explore an untouched realm.” Looks truly spectacular...and utterly insane.
We like getting our heart rates up, taking a big breath of fresh air, savoring delicious food. But we also love telling stories and here's where we type 'em up. (BTW, it works both ways; leave a commentplease and thank you.)
