In the limelight of Grist

A few weeks ago, our very own Gary and Kit got a nice little shout out in Grist—a greenie-blog/online magazine that’s got quite a loyal following. We’re pretty proud of them and think they look lovely in the featured photo. It’d be a shame to spoil the article by summarizing the interview right here so go ahead and peruse the article yourself—it's a nice little story.

Just a little garden restoration

Every year we get the whole Berkeley crew out of the office to do some 2080 work. This year, we went back to our friends at Alameda Point Collaborative to help expand their Growing Youth Farm (which we helped renovate last year)—a one-acre urban farm that grows produce for consumption to the residents of the local community. Pretty cool. So what exactly did we do from 9-4? We built some trellises. We built a giant compost bin. We cleared a few hefty tree stumps. We did quite a bit of weeding, soil amending and planting. And, we constructed a giant…

The epiphany

It’s that time of year again...time for us to get on our bikes and do a bit (er, a lot) of riding to commemorate the moment Gary realized he could make a better-tasting bar. Yup, the epiphany that started it all. We named a ride after it and the annual par-tay was last Saturday. A few brave souls rode a full 150 miles that day; others went with 100 miles, 50 or 30 along a course of rolling hills, scenic vistas and a jaunt through a few miles of hunting territory (bullet shells included). There was also an ad-hoc 58-miler…

Journey to sustainable food programs

I'm taking a short hiatus from talking about our Eco Challenge to blog about a "trip" I'm on. Thanks to Miss Shauna, sustainable food systems extraordinare, I'm attending the Sustainable Food Summit Lab. We became a member this year and now, Shauna, Thao, our director of Community and I have set out on a little journey this week. We met up yesterday afternoon with other folks who are also attending. For a little peek into how cool this is, I sat next to a guy last night at dinner who's in the honey business—as you may (or may not) imagine,…
