The Greensburg, Kansas—“Coolest” Town in America?

Elysa, our director of environmental stewardship, shares exciting news about the soon-to-be coolest town in America. Since 2003, we’ve partnered with NativeEnergy to help build new farmer- and community-owned wind turbines as a way of taking responsibility for our contribution to global warming. We value this opportunity to do something good for both the planet and the communities where these wind turbines are based. This year we are working with them on an exciting new project that brings together a community deeply committed to [re]building green. On May 4, 2007 Greensburg, Kansas was leveled by an EF5 tornado. Estimated to…

Gary’s Adventure in the Dolomites: Day 6

More from Gary's white-road adventure in Italy. So, without further ado. DAY SIX Whoa, today I looked out the window as soon as I got up and it wasn’t what I had hoped for. Rain, and lots of it. Through breakfast I could still see rain; it was very cold and just miserable. We got ready for our ride, hoping it would break. It actually did lighten up so off we went to climb my favorite pass—the Passo Gavia. Today was a short day, one pass to the town of Bormio. The Gavia has so much history. When Jay…

Gary’s Adventure in the Dolomites: Day 5

Bike paths, snow and more mountains...Gary sends another update from his adventure in the Dolomites. DAY FIVE Looked out the window the second I got up to check the weather, and it was spectacular—clear as a bell. Cold but at least it was dry. Our route for the day was long, over 160 kilometers, heading down to the Valley through Bolzano, up over the Passo Mendolla, and over the Passo Tonale to a very cool town called Ponte di Legno. When we hit the valley leading to Bolzano, I spotted something that looked like another bike path. As I mentioned…

Gary’s Adventure in the Dolomites Continues

Gary's back with more from his adventure in the Dolomites with his friend Gregg. Read on for a recap of days three and four. More climbs, more food, and a bit of rain. DAY THREE It’s another spectacular day in the Dolomites. We started on an amazing bike-only trail from Cavalese to the Passo Valles, then went on to the Passo Pellegrino. A quick panini in Moena and then up the Val di Fassa and over the Passo Selle to Selva Val Gardena. We ran into some rain today on the descent into town but it wasn't too cold.…

A White-Road Adventure in the Dolomites

Gary’s off in the Dolomites, riding his bike with a few good friends. Delicious food, amazing views and a few hearty climbs (and descents!) makes for another awesome white-road adventure. Here’s a recap of the first few days of the trip, in Gary’s words… enjoy! DAY ONE I started taking my own bike trips to the Alps and the Dolomites with my good friend Jay back in 1986. I’ve been coming back nearly every year. This time it's trip number 30-something and it’s just as good as it was nearly 24 years ago. Nothing beats riding in the Dolomites,…
