It’s true: we love talking about our food. And we love to get questions from the people who eat it. Here are some of our favorites. If there’s something you want to know and it’s not covered here, just ask. We’ll do our best to get you an answer.
LUNA is the first women’s nutrition bar. In 1999, Clif Bar & Company founders Gary and Kit launched LUNA with a singular goal: create a delicious, nutritious bar that women would love. It is a great on-the-go snack that is made with organic ingredients and women’s needs in mind to help nourish them throughout their busy day and lives.
We’ve reduced the sugar in our existing line of bars, and are thrilled to share them with you in a fresh new wrapper and design.
We are big dark chocolate fans at LUNA, and we know a lot of you are too. We wanted to create a bar in new, decadent dark chocolate flavors that contained similar nutritional attributes of our original LUNA Bar, but with 5 grams of sugar.
Our brand new line of Dark Chocolate bars all contain 5 grams of sugar. These bars are slimmer than our original line; each 42 gram bar contains 180-190 calories, 6-7 grams of protein, and 2-3 grams of fiber. Our existing line of LUNA Bars now contain 25% less sugar (7-10 grams of sugar per bar)*. These 48 gram bars contain 180-190 calories with 7-10g protein and 3-4g fiber. Both lines are also sporting brand new wrappers. It’s all part of the fresh face of LUNA.
At LUNA, we believe that our bars are where nutritious meets delicious. We made sure that our beloved LUNA flavors were not compromised – they are decadent and indulgent, but just contain less sugar!
In addition to updating our packaging, we also wanted to update our bar. The new sleek, slim shape of our Dark Chocolate bars make them easy to grab, throw in a bag, and bite into. These bars are 42 grams, while our original line of bars are 48 grams.
No, our original line is still the same size – 48 grams. It is the same LUNA Bar you know and love, but with 25% less sugar*.
* With the exception of Carmel Nut Brownie and Blueberry Bliss, bars now contain 25% less sugar than our original LUNA bars. Sugar has been reduced from 11-13 grams per bar to 8-9 grams per bar, depending on the flavor.
We are constantly at work in the LUNA kitchen, and look forward to sharing new and exciting snack bars with you in the future!
While we no longer call out these nutrients out on our wrapper, our bars still contain the CORE 4—calcium, folic acid, iron and vitamin D. We include these nutrients in our bars because of their importance to many women’s health.
You may notice our bars look a little different. All of our bars are now sporting a brand new wrapper and design. In addition, our existing line of LUNA Bars contain 25% less sugar* but still have the same great taste and nutrition you know and love.
At the end of 2014 we transitioned all LUNA flavors to be gluten free, providing even more women with the nutrition they need in the flavors they crave. Our ingredient suppliers have confirmed that all ingredients are gluten-free, to include certified gluten-free oats and tapioca syrup solids, both sourced from our trusted, domestic farm suppliers. The location where we make our food is capable of making a gluten-free food and we test our finished products to confirm that they are gluten-free.
LUNA Bars may contain traces of dairy. It is made in a facility processing nuts, tree nuts and seeds. See this allergen table for more details.
Each 1.69 oz. (48g) LUNA Bar has around 180-190 calories with 7-10g protein and 3-4g fiber. We just introduced a new line of Dark Chocolate LUNA Bars which contain 5 grams of sugar. These bars also contain 180-190 calories, 2-3 grams of fiber and 6-7 grams of protein.
We aim to be a catalyst for creating a healthy, just and sustainable food system. For us, this starts with organic ingredients. Organic food connects healthy people to a healthy planet. At Clif Bar & Company, it starts in the kitchen, where every ingredient counts. We craft food using as many organic and sustainably-sourced ingredients as we can.
LUNA is a delicious snack bar that can help satisfy and curb hunger between meals, or serve as a nutritious addition to a light meal. LUNA is not a meal replacement bar or a diet bar. At LUNA, we believe in maintaining a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle, and encourage our fans to eat positively and without guilt.
Of course! Men, too, can enjoy LUNA. While our bar was originally crafted to include nutrients that are typically missing from a woman’s diet, men can and do enjoy snacking on our delicious, nutritious bars as well. In fact, at Clif Bar & Company, we have a favorite saying: “Real Men Eat LUNA.”
Because the bar is formulated with adult needs in mind, kids should not eat a whole bar until their nutritional needs more closely match those of an adult (around ages 9-13). Kids ages 4-9 could have half of a bar on occasion, and as with all food choices, parents should use their best judgment. An option for kids to try is LUNA Minis, which is half the size of a regular LUNA Bar, as well as CLIF Kid Zbar, which is uniquely designed for the nutritional needs of growing, active kids and with flavors kids.
Yes. LUNA contributes to the Clif Bar Family Foundation, which donates 1% of all product revenue to organizations that support and improve environmental, social and cultural needs, from our local to our global community. This means no matter what LUNA flavor or product you purchase, you will be supporting this worthy cause. The Breast Cancer Fund is one of the primary organizations to which we donate.
Clif Bar & Company is committed to sourcing ingredients that are not genetically engineered in all of our products. We have stringent protocols for GMOs which includes requiring affidavits from ingredient suppliers demonstrating they can meet our non GMO requirements.
LUNA is certified kosher by Kof-K.
The main source of fiber in LUNA Bar is inulin – a fiber which most commonly comes from the root of chicory plants (leaves of the chicory plant are also known as endive, commonly used in salads). Additional fiber sources in LUNA Bar include rolled oats, flaxseed, nuts, and dried fruit.
