It’s true: we love talking about our food. And we love to get questions from the people who eat it. Here are some of our favorites. If there’s something you want to know and it’s not covered here, just ask. We’ll do our best to get you an answer.
CLIF SHOT is an easily-digested source of carbohydrates and electrolytes for performance athletes during activity. It is the only energy gel made with 85-90% organic ingredients giving athletes essential nutrition for performance.

CLIF SHOT is certified kosher by Orthodox Union (OU).
CLIF SHOT is the only energy gel with the Litter Leash®. Its patented design allows the tear tab to stay attached to the bottom of the packet after use. We adopted this design after seeing so many gel tabs littering the roads and trails. The Litter Leash® makes the process of opening, eating, and disposing of a gel significantly easier than any other gel.
The package is streamlined with a smaller opening and rounded corners making it easier for athletes to carry and use. The design dispenses the gel easily and the formula helps it go down quickly.
Well-designed studies have not been able to prove that consumption of protein during activity has any performance benefits beyond consuming adequate carbohydrates. Furthermore, consuming protein during activity may actually hurt performance by displacing carbohydrates, slowing carbohydrate digestion and causing digestive distress.
The primary purpose of CLIF SHOT is to deliver essential energy and electrolytes for performance. While vitamins and amino acids are critical to daily well-being, studies continually show that there is no performance benefit to consuming these nutrients during activity.
Yes, CLIF SHOT contains 60-90mg of sodium and 50-85mg of potassium. These electrolytes allow electrical impulses to travel properly throughout your body, enabling proper muscle function. When you sweat you start to deplete yourself of these electrolytes. Similar to dehydration, loss of electrolytes first leads to declined performance and can potentially result in serious health issues.
CLIF SHOT is an energy gel that provides a convenient source of carbohydrates and electrolytes, and in some flavors added caffeine, for sustained energy during sports and other activities. Some flavors of our CLIF® Athlete Series endurance-focused products have varying levels of added caffeine in the form of green tea extract – a natural source of caffeine. CLIF SHOT offers three caffeine levels (25, 50, 100mg per packet) so that athletes can tailor their caffeine intake to match their endurance needs.
All CLIF SHOT flavors with added caffeine clearly state caffeine on the front and back of the package, and have a visual comparison to coffee to help guide a consumer. Caffeinated flavors are not intended for individuals under 18 years of age, pregnant or nursing women, or for those sensitive to caffeine.
Generally, performance athletes need to consume 200-400 calories per hour from all sources, such as gels, chews, bars and drinks. We recommend consuming one packet 15 minutes before activity, followed by 1-2 packets per hour during activity to help support your needs. For flavors with added caffeine, we recommend one packet 15 minutes before activity and one packet during activity. Consumption of CLIF SHOT should always be followed with a mouthful of water. Caffeinated flavors are not recommended for pregnant women, children, or people sensitive to caffeine.
CLIF SHOT is primarily used by performance athletes — cyclists, runners, mountain bikers, triathletes and adventure racers. However, any performance-oriented athlete needing a quick burst of energy can benefit from CLIF SHOT.
CLIF SHOT has fewer ingredients than other brands — less is more. The streamlined approach gives you a performance advantage with a fast-acting energy source from organic maltodextrin and organic dried cane syrup, and with more essential electrolytes.
