Recovery is meant to be used immediately AFTER activity. The quantity consumed will depend on both body weight and the intensity of the activity you just completed. As a starting point, refer to the chart below. We designed Recovery so that it meets the generally accepted principle of 1.2 – 1.5 grams of carbohydrate per kg of body weight immediately following activity. With that in mind a 150 lbs. person should consume between 250 and 400 calories from carbohydrate. 1 (16oz) serving of CLIF SHOT® Recovery contains 280 calories from carbohydrate. This is a starting point for your personal post-activity nutrition. We highly recommend experimenting so that you can perfect this.
Immediately after activity your body has a window of approximately 30 minutes for maximum absorption of carbohydrate. (During intense activity you are depleting yourself of carbohydrate). Take advantage of this window by drinking CLIF SHOT® Recovery, which has 60g of carbohydrate per 16oz serving. Along with carbs, Recovery contains 10 grams of protein per 16oz serving. Protein helps rebuild muscle, but also actually increases the amount of carbohydrate your body will up-take versus taking carbohydrate alone. Recovery also provides electrolytes, anti-oxidants, and supplemental amino acids. Electrolytes replace what you just sweated out, anti-oxidants fight the oxidative stress of activity, and specific amino acids boost your immune system and help with glycogen re-synthesis.
In developing CLIF SHOT® Recovery we used both our in-house resources as well as consulting with a noted San Francisco Bay Area sports nutritionist. We came into the project not being married to any specific theory as to what ingredients should be in a recovery drink. After going through the most current independent and peer-reviewed research we recommended the drink that is now on our label. Every ingredient in Recovery has a specific purpose and is backed by current sports science. We did not add any ingredients just to look good on the label, nor did we add insignificant amounts of effective ingredients, that would allow us to make a label claim, but actually do nothing for you the athlete. The bottom line is that CLIF SHOT® Recovery works great and is backed by current sports science.
Recovery is available in Mango Orange and French Vanilla.
• Recovery meets all of the thresholds of current sports science, and does not include any ingredients of dubious efficacy or insignificant quantities of effective ingredients.
• Recovery tastes great. You won’t have to choke this one down.
• Recovery is the only recovery drink featuring organic ingredients. Recovery contains 76% Organic Ingredients and is sourced from 100% non-GMO sources. None of our competitors use any organic ingredient in their products.
• CLIF SHOT Recovery uses a high level of recyclable materials in its packaging.
Think of our recommendation as a starting point. The mixing chart is based on statistical averages. However despite this, everyone is not the same. Some will prefer a stronger blend of product and will recover well on it, while others will use a more dilute solution and do just fine. As always, experiment with different concentrations to find out what works best for you.
Body Weight (lbs.) Body Weight (kg) # of Scoops Suggested
< 150 < 68 1 scoop per 8oz water
150-175 68-80 2 scoops per 16oz water
> 175 > 80 3 scoops per 24oz water
Protein has two purposes in Recovery. First it provides the basis of muscular regeneration. Second, it’s been clearly shown that in the presence of protein, carbohydrate re-uptake is more substantial.
There is very limited evidence showing that a 4 parts carbohydrate to 1 part protein ratio is the silver bullet of recovery ratios. Current research shows that the presence of protein offers positive effects, but there in NO ACCEPTED PROPORTION at this time. CLIF SHOT Recovery does offer a 6:1 proportion, but this is an incidental number as we wanted to provide a healthy amount of protein (10 grams per 16oz serving) as athletes are often looking for extra protein.
No, neither flavor of Recovery contains caffeine.
Absolutely not. All of our flavors and colors are naturally derived.
Yes, Recovery is certified Kosher Dairy by KSA.
No. Recovery contains whey protein isolate which is dairy-derived.
CLIF SHOT Recovery contains 76% organic ingredients. While Organic products have not been shown to help athletes recover better than products grown conventionally (with pesticides and herbicides), buying organic will undoubtedly contribute to better overall air and water quality which is of great value to endurance athletes.
Recovery contains 76% Organic ingredients, but the overall product is not certified organic. The reason for this is that at this time Amino Acids in general have not been approved by the National Organics Program (NOP). This does not mean that they will not be approved in the future; it’s just that they have not been considered yet. The amino acids in Recovery are plant derived and are non-GMO.
Unlike most of our competitors most of the CLIF SHOT® Recovery packaging is recyclable. The paper label can be removed from the canister and recycled as mixed paper. The inks are soy-based. Most of our competitors use what’s called pressure sensitive labels where the label is adhered with glue to the canister. It is virtually impossible to remove the label, which means that the canister will not be recycled. We chose to use a glue-dot application, which is ironically now out-dated technology. This technology however allows the label to be easily pulled off, which then allows the canister to be recycled as it is a #2 HDPE plastic.
Currently the canister lid and scoop are not recyclable, but we are working to make this a reality in the future. However, the ink on the lid sticker is soy-based.
Under Federal regulation, the inclusion of Amino Acids in any product necessitate that it be labeled as a Dietary Supplement. Our Amino Acids are plant derived and are GMO-free.
Guar/Xantham is an entirely natural, NOP-approved thickener. In the case of French Vanilla it helps makes the drink creamier, like a shake or smoothie.
