Hot Drink Mix Voluntary Recall

Your health and safety is our primary concern.

So it's with extraordinary caution that Hot Chocolate Recovery Drink Mix from CLIF SHOT® with a “Best By” date code of 19SEP09R is being voluntarily recalled.

The FDA is conducting a Salmonella investigation at the Plainview Milk Products Cooperative facility based in Plainview, Minn. Hot Chocolate Recovery Drink Mix contains organic non-fat dried milk from that facility.

No Salmonella has been found in our ingredient or finished product by independent lab tests and no illnesses have been reported.

No other products or flavors are affected.

Only 1800 boxes were sold to sports retailers and select websites.

How do I identify which products are affected?
Only Hot Chocolate Recovery Drink Mix from CLIF SHOT® with a “Best By” date code of 19SEP09R is voluntarily recalled as a precautionary measure. The UPC codes are as follows: 7-22252-11100-5 (single-serve packet) and 7-22252-31100-9 (12 packet box).

No other products are affected.

The Best By code is embossed on the back of the package, on the right edge.

How do I get a refund?
If you have unused packets, first check the date code on the back of the package to see if it matches 19SEP09R, if the date code matches, please retain the packaging with the UPC or locate your proof of purchase and feel free to call us or email for reimbursement before August 30, 2009. All other products and date codes are unaffected.

How do you ensure food safety?
As a food company, Clif cares about the health and safety of its consumers.

This voluntary recall was done as a precautionary measure, even though independent tests indicated no Salmonella in the ingredient or finished hot chocolate drink mix.

We are committed to the following procedures and protocols regarding food safety:
  • Ingredients must meet our high standards and be accompanied by a certificate of analysis which includes microbiological testing. Also, finished batches of drink mix must pass rigorous food safety tests, including microbiological testing, conducted by quality assurance labs. In both cases, we have no verification of salmonella in ANY of our recalled hot chocolate drink mix.
  • All facilities we work with must maintain a commitment to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • All vendors are subject to an extensive vendor quality approval process including annual independent 3rd party inspections and review of their Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans.
  • All vendors must maintain 100% compliance with the USDA’s National Organic Programs (NOP) and meet or exceed any state or federal regulations.
