Kenny finished Race Across America today in 4th place, Enduro division. Since Tinker Juarez had already finished ahead of Kenny, and Bryce Walsh had been left far behind, Kenny had no reason to kill himself in the final miles. It’s been a good day for Kenny. Despite traveling through some of the most difficult terrain of the race, Kenny’s posting some of the highest average speeds "East of the Rockies."

I spoke with Gretchen at about 6:15 PM EDT. She gave me the inspiring update on Kenny’s progress. Last night Kenny and the crew stopped at the final time station with a mandatory 2-hour stop for Enduro riders. Bryce Walsh, who Kenny has been chasing for days was also stopped. Kenny has now passed through Circleville, OH, on the way to Athens, OH. Things are looking up for Kenny. This morning, the crew left Kenny alone to ride up the road while they picked up some food for him. Crew Chief Gretchen left Kenny with her phone as a precautionary measure. The ever-mischievous Souza decided to make a few calls while riding up the road and I was fortunate enough to be on the receiving end.

I missed the call but Kenny left a message, which went something like

Kenny’s cruising along near the Illinois/Indiana border at this writing. The terrain has flattened out again. It’s warm and humid but Kenny’s moving along nicely. He averaged about 17 mph between the last time stations after a 5-hour rest last night.

The crew’s tired, Kenny’s tired, but they all plug away knowing the end isn’t too far off. Best estimates indicate a very late Wednesday or sometime Thursday finish for Kenny.

I spoke with Kenny’s son Dalton yesterday on the phone.

Saturday this writer was a rider, hence the late report. I did the Terrible Two, a 200-mile bicycle ride with 16,000’ of elevation gain. I experienced exhaustion, overheating, dehydration, cramping, and severe fatigue in just a 12 hour ride. It helped, in some small way, to better understand what Kenny is going through. I struggled to finish my ride. Imagine experiencing those feelings day after day, and night after night! It’s simply mind-boggling.
