Tue, July 30 2013 - ‘Card Sharks’ Wins CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year:  National Finalist from Grandville, Mich. Awarded $10,000 Scholarship at San Diego Playoffs

EMERYVILLE, Calif., July 31, 2013 – CLIF Kid®, maker of organic snacks for active kids, named “Card Sharks,” created by Benjamin, age 9, of Grandville, Mich., the winning game of its third annual Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs on Saturday, July 27 in San Diego, Calif. The national contest challenges kids to play outdoors and imagine new backyard games. At the Playoffs, CLIF Kid awarded him a $10,000 grand prize educational scholarship for his efforts in the individual category. In addition, CLIF Kid donated $15,000 to Dawson Elementary School in Jackson, Miss. on behalf of this year’s group category winner, the “MSFTS.”

San Diego kids and their families attended the third annual CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs to play the original backyard games invented by kids from across the country. The games were selected through a national contest that challenged kids ages 6 to 12 to create original backyard games that bring kids together to play outside. Of the five individual category finalists, Benjamin’s creative game was named the winner because of its incorporation of memory and physical activity.

“It was really fun going to San Diego to play my game with Tony Hawk and the other judges,” said Benjamin, grand prize winner at the CLIF Kid Backyard Game Playoffs. “I made a bunch of new friends and it was cool winning the $10,000 scholarship.”

In addition to Benjamin, CLIF Kid flew four individual category finalists to San Diego to present their games to the panel of judges and local families who attended the event. Each finalist received a Specialized1 bicycle, Bell2 helmet and a $1,000 educational scholarship. To learn more about the judges, visit www.clifkidbackyardgame.com.

“The joy and laughter coming from the kids playing the finalists’ games reminded us why we’re committed to reconnecting children with outdoor play,” said Michelle Ferguson, CLIF Kid executive vice president of marketing. “Healthy, confident kids are active kids, and with the Backyard Game Playoffs we can inspire them to pursue lifelong outdoor physical activity and fun.”

New this year was the addition of a group category, which was won by the “MSFTS” from Jackson, Miss. Of the three group finalists announced on the CLIF Kid Facebook page on June 25, the MSFTS’ game was chosen by the public. As the group grand prize winners, they attended the Playoffs and unveiled their game “Dragon Frzz-Ball.” CLIF Kid will donate $15,000 to Dawson Elementary School, in Jackson, Miss. on the MSFTS’ behalf. The donation will help the school purchase physical education equipment to allow students to play outdoors more often.

Game rules for the six games from the CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs can be downloaded at www.clifkidbackyardgame.com for all kids to play outside or in their backyards. Games include “Card Sharks,” “Home Before Sunset,” “Monkeys Go Bananas,” “Soccer Around the World,” “Tic-Tac-Go” and “Dragon Frzz-Ball.”
