Tue, June 24 2008 - CLIF® BAR Feeds Team Garmin-Chipotle During Tour de France with Clean Sources of Natural Energy
BERKELEY, Calif., June 24, 2008 Cycling’s “Clean Team” will take on the 2008 Tour de France burning clean, natural energy from CLIF® BAR’s all-natural and organic food and drinks line. Team Garmin-Chipotle presented by H30, one of only two American cycling teams invited to this year’s Tour de France, is on a mission to show the world that riders can succeed at the elite level and be 100 percent clean.
Since its inception, Team Garmin-Chipotle has been the standard bearer for untainted sports performance. Each of the team’s 25 riders will undergo combined voluntary testing at least 700 times throughout the 2008 season; 20 times the number of tests that most professional cyclists are subject to annually.
“Team Garmin-Chipotle is an example not just in cycling but for all amateur and professional sports, that athletes can achieve success, ethically,” said Jonathan Vaughters, director sportif for Team Garmin-Chipotle. “CLIF BAR natural and organic products work hard and work well with the body to help us train harder, recover faster and perform better.”
On race days, the team’s riders eat CLIF BAR energy bars and CLIF Mojo™ sweet and salty snack bars to begin storing energy a few hours before they compete. Throughout the competition, they drink CLIF SHOT® Electrolyte Replacement Drink and munch on CLIF SHOT® BLOKS™ energy chews to quickly and continually replenish carbohydrates, sodium, chloride, potassium and other essential nutrients. The team reaches for CLIF SHOT® energy gels during the last 30k-40k of a race for a final blast of energy, since the gels deliver carbohydrates into the bloodstream in less than five minutes.
“We’re seeing a real shift in the state of sport, with athletes looking for products that can deliver performance benefits through natural means,” said Dylan Seguin, Team CLIF BAR’s athlete experience manager. “Athletes are finding that natural sports nutrition works as well or better than synthetic and artificial supplements, and is better for the body, both in the short- and long-term.”
The 95th Tour de France runs from July 5-27, 2008, and is made up of 21 stages covering 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles).
CLIF BAR will share Team Garmin-Chipotle and other top athlete stories beginning in July online at Clifbar.com/howdoyouplay. Consumers can learn about these athletes’ stellar contributions to their sport and enter the “How Do YOU Play” promotion for a chance to win a Napa Valley getaway Grand Prize or $1,000 sports retail shopping spree.
