Wed, September 02 2009 - CLIF® BAR GreenNotes™ Brings More “Green” to Music: Multifaceted Program Adds New Musicians and Ridesharing for Concertgoers

BERKELEY, Calif., September 2, 2009—CLIF® BAR GreenNotes™, a program that helps musicians and their fans take steps to protect the environment, announced today that it will green the tours of three emerging artists and partner with an online carpool program to reduce concert traffic.

Created by Clif Bar & Company, the environmentally-conscious maker of the all-natural and organic CLIF® BAR energy bar, CLIF BAR GreenNotes (www.clifgreennotes.com) will bring eco-friendly touring practices to the fall tours of these emerging musicians:

  • Ingrid Michaelson: Best known for smart love songs like million-seller “The Way I Am,” the indie singer/songwriter has had her music aired on popular TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy;
  • Josh Ritter: The son of two neuroscientists has been named one of the 100 Greatest Living Songwriters by Paste Magazine, alongside Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young; and
  • Sam Roberts Band: The Canadian rock singer/songwriter has won six Juno Awards (Canada’s version of a Grammy). His debut album became one of the best-selling releases in Canadian music history.

CLIF BAR GreenNotes will provide the musicians, their bands and crew with green resources and technical assistance, including biodiesel fuel for their tour buses, organic food for backstage snacking, reusable water bottles, organic cotton t-shirts for fan merchandise and recycling containers for everything from batteries to guitar strings.

CLIF BAR GreenNotes also will offer fans a ridesharing option to reduce the impact of their transportation, which is one of the largest contributors of pollution in the music industry.  CLIF BAR GreenNotes is partnering with Zimride, an online ridesharing system that will enable fans to give or find rides to GreenNotes artists’ concerts. Visit www.clifgreennotes.com for details.

For music fans who can’t make it to live concerts, CLIF BAR GreenNotes still makes it possible for them to support environmentally-responsible musicians and help protect the planet. CLIF BAR GreenNotes’ Protect the Places We Play album features 12 tracks donated by the artists, including songs by the John Butler Trio, Martin Sexton, Gomez, Xavier Rudd and Missy Higgins. The album can be purchased on iTunes* for $7.99, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to four environmental nonprofits: Leave No Trace, Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation and the National Environmental Education Foundation. Visit www.clifgreennotes.com to download two free tracks.

“We’re super-excited about the new ways CLIF BAR GreenNotes is making it possible for musicians and their fans to help protect the planet, especially the outdoor places where we all like to play,” said Lauren Hatfield, who directs the CLIF BAR GreenNotes program for Clif Bar & Company. “Our consumers and our own employees are passionate about outdoor adventures, and we want to do our part to ensure that those adventures can continue for generations to come.”
